Albert Roman was born in St. Moritz, Switzerland. His family loved music and fostered his early fascination for the cello. Initial studies with Paul Szabó at the Basel Academy of Music were followed by five years of postgraduate studies in Paris and Geneva with André Navarra and Pierre Fournier. He collaborated with Mstislav Rostropovich to perfect his solo performance . Two first prizes in international music competitions marked the beginning of a busy career, in the course of which Albert Roman has performed in concerts and at music festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America. His repertoire as a soloist includes more than 100 concertos, ranging from the baroque period to the 21th century. He has given the first performance of a number of important cello works, and has recorded Swiss composer Rudolf Moser's 2nd cello concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra, and a CD together with the well-known Italian pianist Bruno Canino "Miniaturen", as well as the Six Suites for Solo Cello by J. S. Bach. In 2002, he was invited by Pierre Boulez to perform his works under his batom. He is particularly interested in music education. Every summer in july, he holds a chamber music workshop for cellists in Switzerland. He is regularly teaching at the music conservatories of Beijing, Schanghai and Wuhan. For his efforts and accomplishments in promoting musically talented young people in China, he was given the "Friendship Award 1999" of the People's Republic of China. Albert Roman is the Artistic Director of the "Chesa da Cultura" on the lake of St. Moritz, a cultural centre where artists from all over the world can live and work in a idyllic setting. www.albertroman.ch
